There is no worse feeling in fishing than setting the hook on a giant, feeling the heavy head shake, and then suddenly reeling in slack line ending in a curly cue. A bad knot will break your heart. But the good news is, you don't need a Boy Scout manual of knots to be a successful angler. You really only need three.
The Palomar is arguably the strongest knot in fishing, retaining almost 100% of the line's breaking strength. It is incredibly simple to tie and is absolutely mandatory if you are fishing with braided line, as braid will slip out of most clinching knots.
It's also the standard for tying drop shot rigs, as it allows you to leave a long tag end to attach your weight. Wet the line before cinching it down to prevent friction burn.
This is the workhorse knot. If you are tying a crankbait, a spinnerbait, or a topwater plug onto monofilament or fluorocarbon, this is the knot. It's fast to tie in rocking boats or high winds. Five to seven wraps is the sweet spot. Again, lubrication is key—saliva works perfectly to ensure the knot seats neatly without damaging the fluorocarbon.
Modern lure fishing heavily relies on a braided mainline tied to a fluorocarbon leader. You get the no-stretch sensitivity of braid with the invisibility of fluorocarbon. The connection knot is critical. While the FG knot is the slimmest and strongest (passing through micro-guides easily), it requires practice. If you are on the water and need a fast, reliable connection, the Double Uni knot is easier to tie under pressure and holds up beautifully.
Pick these three, tie them while watching TV until you can do it with your eyes closed, and never lose a fish to a bad connection again.
